What to eat, what to avoid & why it matters

Scribbled Underline

Why a “bland diet”?

Radiation can irritate your digestive tract and make eating difficult. A bland diet helps by calming the stomach, easing discomfort, and supporting recovery.

What “bland” means

Fruit smoothie

Foods that are: – Low in fibre & fat – Mild in flavour (not spicy/acidic) – Soft, easy to chew & swallow

Good foods to include

– Soft grains: white rice, plain pasta, bread – Mild proteins: scrambled eggs, skinless chicken/turkey, yoghurt – Soft fruits/vegetables: bananas, applesauce, well-cooked carrots/squash – Liquids & moist foods: broth, smoothies, pudding

Foods to avoid or limit

– Spicy, hot pepper, strong seasoning – Acidic fruits & juices (e.g., oranges, grapefruit) – Raw vegetables with skins/seeds, high-fibre cereal – Fried foods, heavy fats, greasy meat

Why nutrition is crucial during radiation

Your body needs extra energy and protein to heal. A balanced bland diet helps maintain strength and reduces fatigue during therapy.
